Getting here with the Bonde Santa Teresa
To get here is easy: you take the little streetcar from Largo do
Carioca in the City Center - and the streetcar became a legend of its
own, it is the last surviving streetcar in Rio, dating from 1890. The
Cariocas, the inhabitants of Rio, call this historic relict
respectfully "Bonde" - named after Mr. Bond (no not Mr. 007...), who
brought the electric tramway to Rio.
The "Bonde" is going up Santa Teresa in kind of a James Bond stunt -
climbing up the "Arcos da Lapa", a historic aquaeduct in Rio, dating
from the 16th century - opening fantastic views of the city center and
Lapa. There are 2 lines, both going up to Largo dos Guimarães, central
meeting point of Santa Teresa. From there, the Bonde splits up: one
line goes to Largo das Neves, a nice place to go out at night, the
other one climbs up the hill, to Dois Irmãos, near to Corcovado.
Metro Line 1 get out at Largo da Carioca and go for “Bonde” street car
Bonde Dir. Paula Mattos to Esquina de Santa Dir. Dois Irmãos to Rua Áurea/ Supermarket
By car: from Glória: go up Rua Candido Mendes, from Lapa: go up Rua Monte Alegre
